Why is the U.S. healthcare system so expensive? The real reason American healthcare is so expensive, and what we can do to fix it. I want to start with a quick story. While I was living in New York City I didn’t have health insurance because I couldn’t afford my monthly premium payment. I still needed to get my annual checkup, so called around to try and find a good deal. After 10 different phone calls I finally found an office that said it would cost $100. So I booked it. 3 weeks later I checked my mailbox and found a bill for $400 for that one doctor appointment. I was SO FRUSTRATED I’d essentially written a blank check to the provider's office. I was so annoyed that I ended up waiting 6 months to pay my medical bill – I’m sure that frustrated the doctor's office, too, since they weren’t getting paid. It was a lose lose. I'm not alone -- 130 MILLION Americans pay out of their own pocket for healthcare each year. Unexpected, high cost surprise bills are the norm. The U.S. Health Care System is a huge mess, and I wanted to understand: WHY are healthcare costs are rising so fast? And what can we do to create a better EXPERIENCE for patients? I’d always heard that to really understand something, you need to “follow the money.” So that’s what I did.
