Presenter Biography: Casper Shyr is the head of data science at Fraser Health Authority, a public healthcare system that serves more than 2 million people in British Columbia. Casper leads a team of data scientists, data engineers, software developers, and UI/UX specialists to bring machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) into the organization. Casper received his Ph.D. from University of British Columbia in the field of computational biology, specializing in the application of ML/AI to promote knowledge translation of patient genome sequencing from bench side to bedside. Since joining Fraser Health 4 years ago, Casper’s department has developed several in-house ML/AI tools, and built collaborations with external partners, tech industries, and academia researchers to transform the way clinicians interact with healthcare data. Talk Summary The potential impact of machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare warrants genuine enthusiasm, with more than 200 scientific papers published in 2019. However, the successful adoption of these technological innovations into the healthcare system has been limited. At Fraser Health, a data science department was setup to bring ML/AI technologies into the healthcare organization. The main objective is to improve the Quadruple Aims: better patient outcome, patient experience, physician experience, and fiscal sustainability. To achieve these strategic aims, several ML tools have been developed in-house by the advanced analytics team, with the focus on improving hospital's congestion, streamlining patient access and flow, and ensuring patients receive timely care in a cost-efficient manner. In this presentation, Casper will share the specific business context of the developed ML tools, his team’s development and deployment strategies, the successes and lessons his team has learned, and the measurable impacts the tools have brought to Fraser Health organization.
