If you’re not working on your craft, the longer you’re out of it the less likely it is you’re going to want to start again soon. Here’s how to get motivated and get things going! Listen to Artists That Got You Into It One strategy you can try to respark your motivation is listen to some of the most powerful songs and verses you ever heard. This is going to be subjective based on what you like, but for me there’s a few songs that can get me excited about rapping again. The songs I like are very lyrically complex of have heavy storylines, but you might be into something else. Sometimes, listening to what you respect most about the art can get you back into it. Listen To Your Dopest Verses If other artists aren’t doing the trick, maybe you should listen to some of your own work! Now I’m sure we all have our fair share of cringeworthy material in the backlog, but chances are you also have a few pieces of work you hold near to your heart. Replaying some of these songs and verses can help remind you how satisfying it is to complete a piece and have it forever. Once it’s made, it’s there to replay or update whenever you want. Remember Your Why Moving away from music for a bit, you can also list out your reasons why you’re rapping. If you want to make music for a living, you damn better be making music on a regular basis, even if you don’t want to. If you’re doing it because you want to make an album, you have to work at it. Digging a little deeper into your motivations can help you realize why you have to start writing and give you the nudge you need to start even when you’re not in the mood. On another note, you may realize you just make music to relax. If that’s your only goal, and you’re not feeling like it’s relaxing you…..then don’t force it. You have to figure out your overall goals, then filter that back down to figure out which action makes the most sense. It might not be the right time for you to make music, but you may also just be phoning it in because you don’t want to do the work. It depends on you. Make A Goal Building on the last point, maybe you’re not motivated because you don’t actually have a goal. What do you want to do with your music? Make an album? A mixtape? A song? Get famous? Vent your feelings? Without a goal, it’ll be much harder to know what steps you need to take to get there. If you don’t have a goal, create one. Then you can look to it and look at your progress for motivation. 3 songs down for this tape….3 to go type of thing. Try A New Style Another way to keep yourself motivated is to keep it fresh. Maybe you’ve been making the same type of music or talking about the same subject too much and you’re burnt out on it. Intentionally try something else! If you’re lyrically deep, try making a lighter song. If you like hard beats, try something softer. It doesn’t really matter, just try switching the style. You might hate it, but the new experience should help jog you out of any funk. Then you can keep working on the new style or go back to what you were doing before. Start Writing Anything You could also have the problem of simple inertia. You haven’t written for a while so you don’t feel like writing. The same thing happens with people going to the gym. The key here is to just start writing. Anything. It doesn’t matter the quality just write something. Many times, you’ll find once you start, you get sucked in and want to keep working on it until it’s completed. Then as you continue writing more frequently, you’ll find yourself wanting to write more and more often. Start building momentum. Those are a few tactics you can use to get yourself out of a slump and start writing again. Thanks for the question, let me know if you need anything else.
