As you may know, motivating yourself to do something, maybe a task in school or at work, can be the hardest thing ever. I’m facing an absolute nightmare at work right now. I’m working in the marketing department of a fairly big IT company in Germany and currently, we are preparring a few events, conferences and a couple conferences at a time. It is insane how much work we have to get through to get everything done in time. And of course, you somehow just want to get home and leave everything behind for a few days. But there are a few tricks how my colleagues and me motivate ourself to get back on track and get shit done. So here we go. “Just five minutes” Focus is the key to get a task done with quality. Sometimes you face annoying and boring tasks, but they have to get done. Force yourself to focus on them for five minutes and boom, suddenly you have made good progress within an hour. When you focus on it, you’ll forget how boring it is and forget time. “Get up” It doesn’t matter how long you force yourself to focus on task, at some point, you’ll loose focus and wont be able to concentrate. When you have reached that point, get up and take a five minute walk. Get a coffee, tea or a refreshing drink. Just do something else not work related for like 5 to 10 minutes. A good employee wont even bother thinking about what you’re doing in those 5 to 10 minutes. In the end, it is for good. “Get the right tools” Working with poor pencils, a sloopy keyboard or a PC from 1995, does not help to motivate yourself at all. I got a Corsair M65 for work, because I absolutely didn’t like the one they had to offer at work. A colleague of mine asked for a better notebook as hers was just dreadful and she got it. Now she’s crunching through presentations in no time. If there’s a tool bothering you and holding you back from doing proper work, get it changed. Don’t be afraid to ask for it to be changed. “Don’t be a perfectionist” As a human, you cannot be perfect even if you crave to be, you cannot. Do your task as good as you can, get it done to a level of quality you’re happy with and then ask your friends or colleagues of what can be done better. Or lean back and try to look at the result from an objective perspective. What can be improved? What can be done better? If you have found something, improve it and repeat the previous step. If you try to deliver a perfect result from the beginning, you’ll get stressed and eventually deliver very poor quality. “Rethink your workflow” If you always get stuck on the same step while working on a task, rethink your workflow of what can be improved. What can help to get the task done quicker with the same quality. What could help me to get it done in no time? Do you really have to do it that way? “Don’t fear it” Don’t be afraid of doing challenging tasks. Jump into it and see how it goes. At work, I made the offer to do a video animation so that we can don’t have to outsource it anymore and can get it done in house. I have never done such type of animation, but was curious to see how it goes and if I am capable of doing it. Well, the result is, I have to make 10 additional animations now as the initial “test animation” was a very good success. Each storyboard and each animation is challenging me and always exceeding my skills, yet, I still work on them with an insane level of joy. And that leads to the last tip. “Celebrate your achievements” Once you have fully accomplished a task with the quality it had to be done in, celebrate it. Get yourself a little treat. Be happy about what you have done. Tell your family and friends. Drink a beer. I got a raise recently and guess what. I went out and had a sick night out with my friends. Just celebrating that I have achieved something more than just a “Thank you”. And that’s about it guys. I hope I did help you finding your way back to motiviation and if I did, why not leaving a like? What are your tips or tricks to motivate yourself? Let me know down below in the comments. And until we see us again, stay safe and out of trouble.'
