STORYLINE: In China, snakes make for popular winter food. They are believed to be good for the body and help combat the cold. Snake soup is the flagship dish of one Hong Kong restaurant. A customer says he has been eating snake soup for many years and is addicted to it. Lemon grass and crispy chips are added to snake soup as part of the seasoning. The shop sells about 600 bowls of soup each day, consuming roughly 1800 snakes weighing a total of 25Kg. Snakes are killed and the skin is removed. It is then boiled in hot water until it is well-done. When it is cool, the meat is separated from bones and mixed with chicken, ginger, snake bones and Chinese herbs to stew for five hours. Chau Ka-ling, the shop owner, believes snake soup can reduce the chance of catching a cold because it energizes the body. She says snake soup is rich in calcium and protein, so can strengthen muscles and bones. Chinese medicine is sometimes added as a cure to certain diseases.
