After living in silence with trauma stemming from years of emotional and physical abuse, Aidan Scott turned to the one place where he felt most safe: an online community. Opening up to others online helped him realize the positive value of social media and use his experience to forge a career in youth mental health advocacy and to create Speakbox. A first-of-its-kind digital mental health community, Speakbox pairs online peer support with digital tools and activities designed to help users live well and manage their mental health with physician-approved tactics. “Speakbox is meant to be a conversation starter,” says Aidan. “It allows for an open channel of communication, allowing individuals to challenge the way the current health system deals with mental health challenges.” Aidan has similar hopes for the partnership between Speakbox and ACCESS 2022 — encouraging more conversation around open technology in the hands of Canadians. “The ACCESS 2022 movement has opened many doors for us, allowing Speakbox to start working with the broader health industry and helping its larger players become more specialized in the field of mental health.”
